EPIC App Orchard Integration
This app integration is designed to systematically collect patient-reported outcomes, send timely information related to treatment plans, monitor patients’ healing and recovery, and generate data-driven insights into how to best treat patients over time.

The Problem
The main personas who utilize our platform often have to jump back and forth between their EHR (Electronic Health Record) and PatientIQ. This creates extra work, stress, and the inability to use our data effectively in daily workflows.
The Solution
EPIC App Orchard Integration! We determined that the best way to meet our customers needs and inject our data into their workflows was through Epic's API, as the majority of our enterprise customers use Epic for their primary EHR.

Goals
-
Make our data more accessible to our primary users
-
Have this application be our highest trafficked page
-
Close $500K in ARR from this application alone
-
Increase MAU by 20% (Healthcare providers)
User Interviews & Personas
To understand how to design and develop the integration, we needed to understand the persona we were creating it for. To understand and refine these personas, we:

-
Interviewed 7 customers, making sure we nailed down our main personas of: Clinical Staff & Healthcare providers.
-
Asked open-ended questions around their specific wants, needs, and goals in their role.
-
Made an affinity map to aggregate the results.
-
Refining personas to guide design and development.
Front Desk & Clinical Staff User Flow

Healthcare Provider User Flow

Early Designs
Designs included both UI/UX thinking, using Figma as the primary tool for high fidelity designs. Designs included the following:

-
Insights workflow for healthcare providers
-
Most recent numerical scores for patients
-
Ability to filter by intervention
-
Ability to filter by timepoint
-
Ability to filter by project
-

-
Task workflow for front desk/clinical staff
-
Ability to see patients with outstanding tasks
-
Ability to get a kiosk code for patients in clinic
-
Ability to send an SMS reminder to patients with outstanding tasks
-
Ability to send an email reminder to patients with outstanding tasks
-

Usability Testing
While in alpha, usability tests were conducted to help uncover the issues our target audience had with the application, as well as opportunities for a more useful product.

-
Designs were tested in real-time, allowing for quick iterations based on usability tests.
-
Ran several usability tests each week with actual users.
-
A total of 4 iterations were tested before going live.
What we learned...
The app is great, but it's too complicated!

-
Stacked filters on one screen is confusing and hard to navigate
-
Would like the task reminders to be a little more robust, giving people the ability to patient info
-
Would be great if we could include patient messaging tab. Jumping back and forth to email is tiresome
Where we landed for MVP!
After several rounds of testing, changes were made to reduce user friction. Some of those changes included:

-
Simplified the UI for a smoother experience & quicker scanning ability
-
More user friendly filters
-
Improved reminder flow
-
Added 2-way messaging feature for healthcare providers & patients

Outcomes
This project was an incredible experience, and the team learned a ton. It was also wildly successful!

-
Have this application be our highest trafficked page
-
In less than three weeks this became our highest trafficked page. It is now leading by over 550%
-

-
Close $500K in ARR from this application alone
-
We surpassed this goal with a month left in the 3rd quarter. At the time of writing we had $1.2 million in ARR from the Epic App (Nov 2020).
-

-
Increase MAU by 20% (Healthcare providers)
-
We hit this goal 6 weeks after launch. The current percentage is up 43%.
-

Learnings & Next Steps
-
Continue to iterate on the tab experiences, keep gathering feedback
-
Incorporate patient forms in the Epic experience
-
Explore ideas around patient alerts & how they tie into messaging
-
Continue to refine the patient panel as we move to a single page application
